Upon request, the Klagenfurt public prosecutor confirmed a corresponding online report from the “Kleine Zeitung”. The girl was traveling on a pedal boat on Lake Wörthersee with her 37-year-old mother last July.
“Negligence with very tragic consequences”
The woman wanted to dock the boat at a jetty in Velden and tie the boat up, but the child was already on the jetty. When the woman briefly took her eyes off her daughter, who couldn’t swim, she suddenly disappeared. After a few minutes, the girl was found by a bather at a depth of about two and a half meters and pulled out of the water without any vital signs. He died in hospital a week later.
The public prosecutor spoke of “negligence with very tragic consequences” that did not require criminal proceedings. The blameless mother was punished enough by what had happened. The woman accepted a diversion with a probationary period.
