The draft resolution presented by Algeria, which recommended to the General Assembly “that the State of Palestine be admitted as a member of the United Nations”obtained 12 votes in favor, one against and two abstentions.
The vote comes after more than six months of Israeli military offensive in that Palestinian territory, in retaliation for the deadly attack carried out on October 7 by the Islamist group Hamas in southern Israel.
Palestine criticized the US veto at the UN
The Palestinian Authority on Thursday criticized the United States’ veto of the Palestinians’ accession to the UN as a full state, considering it a “flagrant aggression” that pushes the Middle East to the “brink of the abyss.”
“This aggressive US policy towards Palestine, its people and their legitimate rights represents a flagrant attack on international law and an incitement to continue the genocidal war against our people (…) that drive the region even further to the brink” President Mahmoud Abbas’ office said in a statement.
The special envoy of the Palestinian Authority, Ziad Abu Amr, had previously stated that “Granting Palestine full membership of the United Nations will eliminate some of the historical injustice to which successive Palestinian generations have been subjected.”
The advice “must assume its responsibilities and must not disappoint the Palestinian people and their legitimate quest for independence and accession”added Hossam Zaki, deputy secretary general of the Arab league.
The Jordanian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ayman Safadi, He considered, for his part, that “there is no security as long as Israeli injustice continues to deny the humanity of the Palestinian people and the right to life, freedom, dignity, security and statehood.”
The Israeli envoy to the UN, Gilad Erdan, He lambasted the fact that the Council was even reviewing the matter, calling it “immoral.”
