The Argentina effect produces the first closure of an industry due to the debt of importers

She clarified that she will comply with “all her obligations,” adding “special attention to workers who will be granted a bonus higher than that required by law.”

The leader of the National Union of Metal Workers and Related Branches (Untmra), Danilo Dardano confirmed to Ambit that the company had referred all the workers, about 140 employees, to the unemployment insurance.

Furthermore, he assured that with the intervention of the Ministry of Labor (MTSS)the union and the company were negotiating mechanisms to maintain sources of employment when the company communicated its final decision.

“We do not have a conflict with the company, these are business and financial realities, which are not the first time they have occurred. We hope that the company can resolve and get back to work,” he stated. “What we have not achieved is for the government to realize the serious situation of the manufacturing industry”he added.

The president of the Chamber of Industries of Uruguay (CIU), Fernando Pachesaid to Ambit that the company suffered what it defined as “onslaughts” of non-payment by Argentine clients for about two years, which had an impact on its financial situation in addition to other inconveniences. In any case, he clarified that the closure is solely industrial and valued the fact that the company would maintain its commercial presence in the local market.

“It is one more pearl of the lack of competitiveness existing, added to difficulties such as high costs in salaries and in energy areas such as fuels”he added.

The representative of the business union also expressed that “unfortunately this is a repeated fact” and that there are other Uruguayan companies with similar difficulties.

Pache regretted that there have been no communications from government authorities with the union regarding this situation. “He doesn’t react,” he said. “We understand that employment is the basis of a good society,” he concluded.

Ámbito tried to communicate with Fanacif without success, being able to confirm that the plant located on the outskirts of Montevideo is currently closed.
