As early as April 5th, two Turkish truck drivers are said to have picked up 5 semi-trailers with Turkish registration from the “Rollende Landstrasse” in Wels and brought them to the parking lot at the Suben border crossing (Schärding district, Innviertel). Each of the trailers is said to have been loaded with more than 20 tonnes of Class 2 dangerous goods – gases. However, the vehicles were neither marked as transporting dangerous goods nor were there any accompanying documents, according to the police. In addition, the protective equipment required for such transports was extremely inadequate.

On Friday around 2.30 p.m. the 5 semi-trailers and 2 towing vehicles finally came to the attention of the Ried motorway inspection’s dangerous goods patrol in the Suben car park. As the investigation revealed, the trailers contained gases that were banned in Germany, which is why they were not allowed to enter the country. Loaded in Turkey, the transporters came unmarked to Upper Austria and stood in front of the border crossing for days without their dangerous cargo being visible to the outside world.
