According to the materials of the investigation, 62-year-old Lieber, who is considered one of the world’s leading experts in the field of nanomaterials, without the knowledge of the main employer, was appointed to a position at Wuhan University of Technology. and received a salary there in the amount of $ 50 thousand a month.
In addition, the Chinese university paid Lieber’s operating expenses in the amount of up to $ 150 thousand and allocated more than $ 1.5 million to equip a research laboratory for him, it follows from the data of the prosecution.
The scientist himself said that the main motivation for him was not money, but world recognition and the desire to receive the Nobel Prize, writes the Wall Street Journal.
In total, the US authorities have charged 24 more scientists with withholding information about ties with China. Of these, nine pleaded guilty, and six were dropped.
Earlier in 2020, the Rostov Regional Court sentenced Aleksey Temirev, Doctor of Technical Sciences from Novocherkassk, to 7.5 years in prison for treason with serving a sentence in a strict regime colony. He was also assigned one year of restriction of freedom after serving his sentence.
