The party leader received 93.4 percent of the votes. The Extended Board had previously voted unanimously for Meinl-Reisinger, and the party leader had also clearly won the open online primary.
Meinl-Reisinger received 93.4 percent of the 542 votes cast on Saturday. 506 voted for the party leader. In the run-up to the 2019 National Council election, Meinl-Reisinger received 96.1 percent for the election as the top candidate. Party founder Matthias Strolz achieved more than 98 percent in 2017.
After her election as the top candidate, Meinl-Reisinger swore the members to the upcoming elections: “Self-sufficiency is not good, you have to stay hungry and curious. And we have this willingness, so I am confident that we will be successful like never before the National Council election.” The NEOS are “Ready like never before” (that was the slogan projected behind the party leader during the speech). “We will lead NEOS into government. We will renew Austria.” Meinl-Reisinger emphasized that she no longer wanted to be satisfied with the role of the “small opposition party”.

According to the party leader, she has presented a clear plan “how we can go into the future, how we can relieve the burden on the center and ensure competition again.” This requires both long-term visions and very specific points. She believes “in every single person, in their energy and creativity,” says Meinl-Reisinger. What is needed again is the belief “that you can build something for yourself using your own strength”. “We want to lift the wings of every child. We want to do that and we will do that.”
Demand for a reduction in the tax and contribution rate
She also repeated well-known demands such as reducing the tax and contribution rate. So that people “have the feeling again that they can create something for themselves.” A “trend reversal, a turning point” is needed and the NEOS could achieve that with their policies. Among other things, she once again brought up the “opportunity account for young people” that she had called for. She set up a reform group for this purpose. A proposal will be presented “soon”.
Like former MP Irmgard Griss, Meinl-Reisinger also complained about the current political culture. Politics is “not a good place, an increasingly broken place.” You get the impression that it’s all about demeaning others in order to strengthen the position of your own party.” She also wants to “sweep in front of her own door.” The NEOS also let themselves go and played along,” demanded the party leader introduced a new style: “We can’t continue like this.” Rather, they want to move on to “seeing what can be done together and being ready for it. Ready like never before.”
The remaining places on the federal list and on the nine state lists will then be allocated. Here too, after the primary election and the board, there is already a provisional ranking, which can still be changed by the general meeting.
