NATO thanked Argentina for its request and hopes for closer collaboration

The country’s approach to NATO is linked to the new foreign policy developed by the government of President Javier Milei, aligned with the United States and Israel. “Argentina plays an important role in Latin America and I appreciate the request to explore the possibility of becoming a NATO partner,” said the undersecretary in a statement.

“Closer political and practical cooperation could benefit us both,” Geoana further noted, noting that the organization “works with a variety of countries around the world to promote peace and stability“.

Argentina and NATO: the keys to the possible alliance

As the international organization explains, the “global partners” are countries with which the Alliance cooperates individually, some of which have participated in the organization’s military operations. In the past, Argentina had contributed to the operations of support for NATO peace in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo.

In addition, Argentina played a role in humanitarian aid intervention in the war in Ukraine, and Geoana thanked this “life-saving” support, highlighting the sending of food, medicine and shelter to refugees.

First step towards association with NATO

This first step towards formal association taken by Argentina, which began its political dialogue with NATO in the early 1990s, requires to complete the consensus of the 32 allies. And if carried out, Argentina would become the second country in Latin America with that special relationship with NATO.

In addition to Colombiawhich was admitted as a partner in 2017, NATO granted the same status to which Argentina now aspires to countries such as Australia, Afghanistan, Iraq, Japan, South Korea, Mongolia, New Zealand and Pakistan.

However, there is an aspect to take into account regarding the case of Argentina, and that could generate some internal conflict, is the diplomatic dispute over sovereignty of the Malvinas Islands with the United Kingdom -one of the founding members of NATO-, which caused a war in 1982.
