This was explained by the head of the State Transport Department (LVA) Thomas Losko at a media event ahead of the event on Thursday. In addition to the traffic police, the emergency unit, the operational unit, officers from the uniformed bicycle service and civilian forces will also ensure that everything runs smoothly, said Losko.
“Prepared for all incidents”
However, based on past experience, the executive branch does not expect any major problems at the weekend. The LVA boss told media representatives that they are prepared for “all incidents.” Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) added on Thursday that there was no “concrete threat situation” for the running weekend. Nevertheless, vigilance is required. “Especially in times like the ones we are currently experiencing, major sporting events have an increased threat potential,” said Karner, referring to the Hamas terrorist attacks on Israel on October 7, 2023.
From bubble to collapse
The Red Cross will ensure a medically problem-free marathon on Sunday with 300 people and 30 vehicles, said Vienna State Rescue Commander Michael Sartori. “However, most of the participants know their physical condition very well,” said Sartori optimistically. Based on the experiences of the past few years, around 500 medical interventions can be expected, said the rescue commander. “But there’s everything there – from a blister on the foot to a collapse,” he explained. “For the number of people there are generally few medical problems.”
It was also said that around 2,000 liters or 8,000 portions of tea were provided for the around 35,000 participants for possible hypothermia after the run. “We give it out in the finish area because the weather forecast is below what runners would like and to avoid the runners quickly becoming hypothermic.” The organizers also use around 300 folders.
42,000 athletes at the start
A total of around 42,000 athletes will take part in the running events on Saturday and Sunday. Florian Holecek, Head of Production, gave the organizers a provisionally positive assessment on Thursday. “This is the third largest field of participants we have ever had on a weekend,” said Holecek. “We notice that people want to run again after Corona.”
Extensive roadblocks
Large-scale closures and traffic diversions are expected at the weekend. According to the ÖAMTC automobile club, the ring section between Stadiongasse and Schottengasse will be closed from Friday evening. On Saturday from 12.30 p.m. the ring will also not be accessible from Operngasse to Stadiongasse. Franz-Josefs-Kai and other ring sections will be closed from 5:30 p.m. After 7.45 p.m. most sections – except for the one in front of the town hall – should be open again.
During the marathon on Sunday, the entire 42-kilometer-long route from the start at the Vienna International Center in Vienna-Donaustadt to the finish area at the Burgtheater in the city center will be closed in sections, said Losko. At the same time, however, the police are setting up options at 33 points to partially or completely cross the route. The ÖAMTC still recommended traveling using the subway lines.
The Wiener Linien is also affected by the running weekend. Tram lines 1, 2, 71 and D will be rerouted from the start of operations on Saturday until 8 p.m. on Sunday. In addition, the U2Z does not run at all during this period. A further 24 bus and tram routes will be shortened or rerouted on Sunday.
