The fire department was alerted at 5:20 p.m. after thick smoke was coming from the building’s windows. When the fire brigade arrived, the apartment was already fully engulfed in flames. The emergency services were able to successfully prevent the fire from spreading further.
Burning stove as the cause
One of the residents, a 35-year-old Afghan, said that a neighbor came to him and told him that her stove was on fire. The man tried to put out the fire with a fire extinguisher, but was unsuccessful. In the meantime, everyone in the house went outside, but the neighbor, who was unknown to the man, fled.
Five people, including four children (4, 11, 11 and 13 years old), were taken to the Pyhrn-Eisenwurzen Clinic in Steyr with suspected smoke poisoning.
The fire department reported a fire at around 6 p.m. A total of around 50 firefighters were on duty.
During further investigations, the police managed to track down the initially unknown neighbor. It was a 28-year-old woman from Linz who was living there unregistered.
