Like in 2021, Pogacar triumphed at Liège-Bastogne-Liège

Tadej Pogacar

The 25-year-old triumphed on Sunday at the end of the spring classic season in a superior manner for the second time after 2021 at Liège-Bastogne-Liège. The top favorite from the UAE team, who was eliminated last year due to a fall injury, launched an attack on the climb to La Redoute and achieved a clear solo victory on the remaining 35 km of the total 255 km.

Felix Gall (Decathlon) and Patrick Konrad (Lidl) did not make it into the top 40. Pogacar won 1:39 minutes ahead of the French climbing specialist Romain Bardet (DSM). Third and winner of the sprint of the first chasing group was world champion Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin), 2:02 minutes behind. The Dutchman, who was successful this year at the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix, still has to wait for his first victory at the “Doyenne” in the Walloon Ardennes with its altitude of more than 4,000 meters. Last year’s winner Remco Evenepoel was injured; the Belgian, like several other stars, suffered broken bones in a mass fall during the Tour of the Basque Country at the beginning of the month.

Pogacar made a perfect return to racing in cold but mostly dry conditions after his victory in the Tour of Catalonia in March. Next he will tackle the Giro d’Italia for the first time in May, and in July he also wants to win the Tour de France for the third time.
