Great success at the Ovid competition

Dominik Wagner impressed across the board in Italy.

Year after year, students from the Kremsmünster collegiate high school, where the classical languages Latin and ancient Greek are still very much alive and taught in all their relevance, take part in the international Ovid competition in Sulmona, the famous poet’s hometown.

This year, together with 41 other participants from Italy, Romania, Germany and Austria, Helena Hörtenhuemer and Dominik Wagner, both in their 5th year of learning Latin, took on the challenge of not only translating a Latin passage from Ovid’s love poem into German, but also interpreting it.

Dominik Wagner impressed with his translation and interpretation performance by, among other things, interpreting Ovid’s text in terms of the Roman poet’s biography and also pointing out statements that are still valid today: For example, the poet’s appeal to diversity, which dates back more than 2,000 years, appears more contemporary than ever and against the same old thing, against the monotony, the “chaos” (…).

In addition to the prize for the best translation from among foreign guests, Wagner also achieved third place in the overall ranking. He thus brought a victory and a “Stockerlplatz” to Kremsmünster, which all the teachers, especially those of classical languages, are very happy about. What a great success considering the strong Italian competition in the competition. His Italian roommate Francesco probably summed it up best: “Mamma mia, Dominik!”
