Nine-year-old Simon from Obernberg suffers from the metabolic disease Hunter’s disease. This leads to a slower pace of growth and mental development.
As the disease progresses, walking becomes more difficult for Simon every day. In order for him and his family to remain in their home, it must be adapted for disabled people. What is urgently needed, among other things, is a stair lift. The costs are only partially covered by the health insurance company and are difficult for the family to cover alone.
This gets support from the two Innviertel ultra runners Günter Dieplinger from Münzkirchen and Christian Maierhofer from Wildenau. They want to circumnavigate Upper Austria in just ten days and collect donations for Simon along the way.
In their project, Dieplinger and Maierhofer will cover a total of 700 kilometers and climb 11,000 meters in altitude. The starting shot will be fired today at eight o’clock in the morning. The first stage takes the people of Innviertel from Mühlheim to Engelhartszell. For the next ten days they will complete one and three quarters of a marathon every day. A herculean task, not only for the body, but especially for the head, as Dieplinger reports: “The first three days in particular will be torture. After that, you get into the rhythm and it gets easier day by day. Probably because of that The goal is getting closer and closer.” Dieplinger and his partner will walk ten hours a day, sleeping in private quarters along the route. These were largely provided by the communities. “We wrote to all communities and the response was very positive. Many are willing to support us,” says Dieplinger.
Companions collect donations
The two are accompanied by a team that travels in the support bus. This will drive to companies along the route to collect donations for Simon. The fundraising campaign ends on May 1st at 1 p.m. with the finish at the starting point in Mühlheim am Inn as part of the “Brass Music Day” event.
