Doctors Without Borders saved almost 240 people in the Mediterranean

The crew of the “Geo Barents” took the migrants on board from three boats in distress, the organization announced on Twitter on Wednesday. A spokeswoman confirmed a total of 355 rescued people on the ship. The “Geo Barents” have been waiting days for a port to be assigned so that the people there can be brought ashore.

Most of the time, the aid organizations are assigned a port by the authorities in Italy. The “Ocean Viking” from SOS Mediterranee with 114 people and the “Sea-Eye 4” from the German organization Sea-Eye with 216 rescued people on board have also been waiting for days. The migrants often leave the coasts of Libya or Tunisia and want to reach the EU. Again and again the often overcrowded boats get into distress and people die on the dangerous crossing.
