In another statement, the Secretary of State, Antony Blink, warned that “the continuous activities of this network based in Brazil show that Al Qaeda remains a global terrorist threat“.
Al Qaeda and affiliated regional organizations are financed through individual fundraisers in the Persian Gulf countries and other parts of the world.
“The United States is committed to working with our partners, including Brazil, to disrupt Al Qaeda’s financial support networks,” Blinken said.
Among the three sanctioned men appears Haytham Ahmad Shukri Ahmad Al Maghrabi, who arrived in Brazil in 2015 and was one of the initial members of an Al Qaeda support network in the country, according to the Treasury Department.
Al Maghrabi maintained frequent contacts and business deals, including the purchase of foreign currency, with another person affiliated with the organization and based in Brazil, Ahmed Mohammed Hamed Alistates Washington.
Another of those sanctioned is Mohamed Sherif Mohamed Mohamed Awad, who arrived in Brazil in mid-2018 and “played an important role in an Al Qaeda-affiliated group based in the country and participated in the printing of counterfeit currency.”
According to the Treasury Department, Awadd is the sole shareholder of the São Paulo-based furniture company Home Elegance Comercio de Moveis Eireli.
The third is Ahmad Al Khatib, the sole shareholder of the Enterprise Comercio furniture store of Moveis and Intermediaçao de Negocios Eireli, also sanctioned and based in the same city.
The three are accused of “having helped, sponsored or materially provided financial, material or technological support, or goods or services” to the extremist organization founded by Osama bin Laden, the AFP agency reported.
That is why the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) of the Treasury Department blocked all its assets and interests in the United States and vetoes transactions carried out by Americans or within the United States that are destined for the sanctioned.
Washington often used financial tools to limit al Qaeda funding flows globally.
