Before the rescues carried out on Wednesday, the boat had spent days waiting for the go-ahead to dock in a safe port in which to disembark the passengers.
The ship ‘Ocean Biking’, owned by the NGO SOS Mediterranee, which currently has 114 migrants on board, and the ship ‘Sea-Eye’, which has another 216 inside, is also operating in the Mediterranean. Both have spent days looking for a safe port in which to dock.
Meanwhile, the lifeless bodies of three migrants were recovered this Wednesday next to the Greek island of Folegandros, while dozens were still missing after the shipwreck of the boat in which they were traveling.
In the important rescue operation still in progress, 12 people were rescued, including minors, the coast guard said.
The operation began Tuesday afternoon, after the coast guard received the alert that a boat with migrants to the south of the island was having problems and was beginning to fill with water. According to state television ERT, the ship was probably traveling from Turkey to Italy.
Those rescued – seven Iraqis, three Syrians and two Egyptians, of whom only two were wearing life jackets – were transferred to the hospital on the island of Santorini.
However, at the moment the total number of people in the boat is not known exactly, since the survivors gave figures of between 32 and 50 people, a coast guard official told AFP.
