German Foreign Minister announced a consensus with the Chancellor on Nord Stream 2

German Foreign Minister Annalena Berbock and Chancellor Olaf Scholz have developed a common position on the launch of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. She made the corresponding statement on December 22 in an interview with Die Zeit.

“We have a common position. Although it is not a secret that in the past we took different positions on this issue, both the Chancellor and I have now clearly stated that the certification process should be based on European legislation, ”said Berbock.

She stressed that the launching of the project will be considered in the light of energy security, which is important for Germany.

On December 20, Wolfgang Büchner, deputy official representative of the German Cabinet of Ministers, stressed that Scholz considers Nord Stream 2 an economic project.

At the same time, Washington has long opposed the project and has already imposed sanctions on Nord Stream 2 several times, which, as experts pointed out, complicated relations with Germany, which supports the project.

On December 17, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz noted at a joint press conference with French President Emmanuel Macron following the EU summit that the issue of the compliance of Nord Stream 2 with European energy legislation is being considered.

Earlier, on December 16, Germany postponed a decision on certification of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline until at least mid-2022.

The construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline was completed on September 10. It was built from Russia to Germany along the Baltic seabed with the aim of direct gas supplies to Europe. The EU countries mainly support the project and participate in its implementation. The Baltic states, Poland, the USA and Ukraine are opposed.
