Dominic Thiem misses the main Madrid competition and falls out of the top 110

Dominic Thiem

The gate to the main competition of the Masters 1000 tennis tournament in Madrid, where Dominic Thiem Sefanos brought Tsitsipas to the brink of defeat a year ago, remains closed this year. The 30-year-old from Lichtenwörth clearly failed in the second qualifying round on Court 4 of the facility. Thiem lost to Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis 1:6, 3:6 after 85 minutes.

This is extremely bitter – also because the former US Open champion will lose another 15 points from the ranking and Thiem will no longer appear in the top 110 in the upcoming world rankings. In the live ranking he is currently only number 113 and is therefore far away from the top 50 position that he is aiming for at the end of the year. If he is ranked further back, Thiem wants to end his career. At least that was his announcement.

There were a few magic shots against Kokkinakis, but Thiem again lacked consistency. Too many unforced errors played into his opponent’s hands. In the first set the Lower Austrian gave up the service twice, in the second he missed three break points in a row when the score was 1-0. Kokkinakis took the serve from Thiem to make it 4:3, and in the following game there was a chance for a rebreak. Instead of 4:4 it was 3:5. At the end, Thiem lost his service to zero.
