The presidential candidate for Independent Party (PI) and current Minister of Labor and Social Security, Pablo Mieres, commented on the plebiscite for the reform of social security and pointed against the Wide Front for not making a unanimous decision regarding the initiative.

When the leader was consulted about the possibility that the PIT-CNT has achieved the 270,000 signatures it needs before Saturday to enable the plebiscite, He assured that “the first problem” will be Broad Front.

“If signatures are reached, the first problem will be the Wide Frontwhich has a problem of division in its ranks, between those who support and those who do not support, and pretend to be the government,” he said.

In that sense, he stressed that the Independent Party has a clear position regarding the proposal, while the Wide Front “there is freedom of action.” An example of this is the support of the mayor of Montevideo and presidential candidate, Carolina Cosse, while his opponent in the internal Yamandu Orsiwas against the way in which the project is worded.

“It is outrageous and the party is against it, it is nonsense and it is going to be a catastrophe for social security,” said the PI representative.

The minister’s reasons against the plebiscite

Regarding why his party is against it, the candidate listed a couple of reasons. “This initiative of PIT-CNT “It is so serious that it is not particularly talking about the 2023 reform, it is bringing down the entire social security system, because it eliminates the mixed regime that was not an innovation of this reform but of that of 1996,” he explained at a press conference.

“This sweeps away the legal certainties, with the savings of one and a half million Uruguayans. Months go by and I am still surprised at the mistake that the PIT-CNT by pushing this. It is one thing to be against the reform we voted on last year, there may be differences or adjustments. But this is outrageous,” he added and assured that “all economists on the right, center and left” say it is “nonsense.”

In that sense, he compared the plebiscite with the constitutional reform of Argentina 15 years ago. “With this Uruguay loses credibility in the world. What is proposed today in the constitutional reform is what it did Argentina 15 years ago and this is how they are in terms of social Security: They are one of the worst systems in the world. AND Uruguay is one of the best. “It’s like we’re shooting ourselves in the foot,” he remarked. “If the signatures are confirmed, obviously we are going to campaign because the future of young people is at risk,” she added.
