IT sector exports reached US$ 1,816M and are consolidated in the Top 5

The exports of the sector linked to Information technology(TI) totaled 1,816 million dollars, equivalent to 4.3% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Uruguay, according to a report by CPA Ferrere.

The technology sector has positioned itself as one of the 5 sectors that export the most in the country.”

In fact, CPA economist Ferrere presented a study that shows that, accounting for the direct contribution (activities of the sector), indirect (demand of inputs) and induced (consumption of wage bill), The total contribution to the economy is 3,059 million dollars.

Taking into account the same variables, the amount of busy workers reaches 50,297 and the remunerations of the IT sector totaled 1,137 million dollars, Capurro explained.

The challenges to consolidate the evolution of the IT sector

While, Capurro focused on how to consolidate the evolution of the IT sector looking to the future, with six axes, among which “capturing opportunities in global demand, of a dynamic sector on the frontier of knowledge” stood out.

At the same time, he proposed “displacing supply restrictions that limit growth”, as well as “capitalize on the potential”, considering that it can “double every 10 years”. Another important point was to “improve the productivity and the growth”.

Finally, he aimed to “generate a more balanced mix between products and services,” while asking to be prepared for changes at an international level, such as “the threat of the BEPS project.” (OECD), “which imposes a new global taxation scheme.”
