“I couldn’t even play Uno anymore”

“I couldn’t even play Uno anymore”

Claudia Nigl had Corona in May of this year. For days she suffered from a fever, headache and felt limp. But the corona test did not work for ten days. When she also had stomach pains, the now 43-year-old from Kirchberg-Thening was admitted to the Ordensklinikum der Barmherzigen Sisters in Linz in consultation with the family doctor. There the doctors finally discovered that she was suffering from corona – and that the virus had caused pneumonia. “I was relieved to finally have a diagnosis,” says the mother of two children aged four and eight. After a week she came home, where her husband cared for her lovingly.

Overcome by fears

Everything seemed fine: Nigl was still short of breath and tired, but the condition improved. She went back to work. But the feeling of exhaustion remained, and there were also concentration problems: “I was no longer able to follow conversations with several people, I forgot things, I couldn’t even play Uno with my children anymore.” In addition, there was insomnia because during the night they overcame the old fears from the time in the hospital. It all grew into depression.

But Nigl did not give up: She sought advice from the Long Covid counseling in the Neuro-Med campus in the KUK, and visited the Covid coping group. Finally, she decided to start a rehab on November 14th at the Vamed Rehabilitation Clinic in Enns. “Here I found my way back to life,” she says. She does strength and endurance training, exercises her concentration and works out strategies for how she will continue to cope with the disease. Nigl was allowed to go home two days ago: “I feel strong again, but I know that there can be setbacks.” She would like to thank all the doctors, nurses and therapists who have accompanied her since May: “I was treated competently and kindly. These people do great things!” She also has a message to everyone who suffers from Long-Covid: “Don’t give up, get help and look for people who do well. There is hope!”
