“In our Polarium, visitors can currently observe how the rockhopper penguin pairs raise their young, taking turns warming and feeding them in the nest,” said zoo director Stephan Hering-Hagenbeck on Wednesday.
It was emphasized that Schönbrunn Zoo is one of the few zoological gardens in Europe that can look forward to successful breeding of the highly endangered species every year. Since 2015, the zoo has coordinated the European Conservation Breeding Program (EEP) for northern rockhopper penguins. He is therefore responsible for breeding across Europe.
The northern rockhopper penguin is around 55 centimeters tall when fully grown and has distinctive yellow tufts of feathers on its head. In its native region of the southern Atlantic and southern Indian Oceans, it is critically endangered due to overfishing and pollution. Climate change is also giving him a hard time.
