The KGB of Belarus detained a Russian in the case of terrorism

The State Security Committee of Belarus detained the Russian on suspicion of setting fire to the car of an employee of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and puncturing the tires of 39 trolleybuses for extremist motives. This was announced on December 22 by the head of the KGB department for the Gomel region, Alexander Melnikov.

“A recent example is the detention by our department of a citizen of the Russian Federation […] who set fire to the personal car of the first deputy head of the Penitentiary Department for the Gomel region for extremist, political reasons, and punctured the wheels of 39 trolleybuses in Gomel in order to stop public transport, “he said at a meeting between President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko and area. His words are quoted by BelTA.

Melnikov also stressed that the destructive forces continue to try to destabilize the situation.

Earlier on Wednesday, Lukashenka spoke about the detention of seven people for attempting to commit terrorist attacks. According to him, one is still wanted, he could have fled to Russia.

On December 6, it was reported that the Minsk police detained five people on suspicion of attempting to commit a terrorist act. It was noted that the detainees could be involved in an attempt to set fire to one of the buildings of the Frunzenskiy district police department of Minsk in August 2021.

Earlier, on October 18, the Belarusian leader said that during the period of the constitutional referendum, a new attempt could be made to intensify the protests. Among the methods used by Western countries, he listed information technology and psychological warfare, which creates a negative image of power among the population. According to the president, a new attempt at revolution in the republic is possible.

In Belarus, after the presidential elections on August 9, 2020, in which Lukashenka won, protests were held. The opposition declared the ex-presidential candidate Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, who had left for Lithuania, as the winner of the elections. She is a defendant in criminal cases, included in the list of persons involved in terrorist activities.
