Lacalle Pou defended a strong State before Javier Milei and social networks exploded

In his speech, he proposed explaining the reasons for the success of the Uruguayan model and among the main points he highlighted was the role of the state.

“There are things that are in the DNA of our country and no one discusses them anymore. Among them a strong state“, he stated before 1,500 liberal and libertarian politicians and businessmen, including the president himself. Javier Milei. And he clarified: “It does not mean a large State. Surely it doesn’t have to have much dimension to be strong. It means having strong institutions and for this there has to be a clear separation of powers, which is not divorce.”

Lacalle Pou continued in his words: “There has to be a democracy strong and, what I am going to say is not very popular, but we owe it in Uruguay to the political parties. Without them, democracy is more risky.”

The president’s words, which were followed closely by those present – many of whom had praised him in their own speeches like the former presidents Mauricio Macri, Jorge Quiroga (Bolivia) and José María Aznar (Spain), quickly became the talk of Milei’s followers on social media.

One of the first accounts to echo Lacalle Pou’s proposal was that of La Derecha Diario. This is an account that, for years, has been linked to conservative and neoliberal forces in the region.

“Lacalle Pou went crazy,” began the tweet replicating the fragment of his speech in which he mentioned the need for a strong State.

Quickly, the tweeting universe – key in the communication base of Javier Milei– made Lacalle Pou a trend, questioning precisely his ideas. And the president’s words came two days after the Argentine defended the reduction of the State on national television and after the massive mobilization against the government for budget cuts to public universities.

“They invited Milei to the Libertad Foundation so that Lacalle Pou could tell him to his face that he is an idiot and that he has no idea what he is doing,” wrote Arrepentidos de Milei.
