The city of Wels wants to punish households that dump the wrong waste into the organic waste bin. Plastic, metal, glass, diapers, building rubble, cigarette butts – the number of so-called “missing throws” has increased in recent weeks. That’s why the “Sharp Action” is now being started, as city councilor Thomas Rammerstorfer (Greens), responsible for waste management, announced in a broadcast on Thursday. In the event of repeat cases, the organic waste bin can also be confiscated.

The wrong waste can only be sorted from the biogenic material with considerable additional effort and subsequently makes the composting process more difficult, it was said. But since this is exactly what has happened in the past few months, the city will now take action. “Colleagues at the garbage truck will check when collecting” whether there is any incorrect content, said waste officer Lukas Aitzetmüller. This will be documented with photos. The first missed throw gets a red card in the bin. Owners can then hand out the wrong substances, and the rest will be taken away the next time the organic tour is emptied.

“If the offense is committed again, the organic container will only be emptied by the residual waste tour at additional cost,” is the plan. This costs between ten and twelve euros. If such pollution continues, the city of Wels will then collect the free organic waste bin. Rammerstorfer also wants to educate the population more about what is allowed in the organic waste bin and what is not. However, consequences must also be drawn in individual cases.
