Spooky action at a distance, Schrödinger’s cat: At first glance, the terms surrounding quantum physics are more reminiscent of magic than research. In fact, the field continues to pose many puzzles that will keep scientists busy for a long time. However, some approaches to practical application are already well advanced. An international initiative wants to draw attention to this with a demonstration experiment – and the JKU is also involved.

In the “QuanTour” project, a specially made quantum light source travels from one university to the next over several months – twelve in total. The Institute of Semiconductor and Solid State Physics under the direction of Armando Rastelli in Linz is the first stop.
The project is the start of the “International Year of Quantum Physics and Technology 2025”, which aims, among other things, to bring the basic principles of these research fields closer to a broad audience.
