Vaccine skeptics gather in Wels before Christmas

Despite an impending fifth lockdown, the vaccine skeptics take to the streets again shortly before Christmas. Thomas St. from Wels has registered a rally with the police for today, which will start at 4.30 p.m. on Minoritenplatz. The motto is “A sea of lights in Wels for free vaccination decisions” and is obviously intended to counteract the sea of lights held in Vienna on Sunday for the corona dead.

St. reported 300 participants to the police. How many will ultimately come is uncertain. The event is advertised on social media, so it can be expected that demonstrators from abroad will also appear. “You don’t yet know how many there are. The organizer couldn’t tell us that either,” emphasized the officer in charge of the Wels city police.

From 5 p.m. the protest march will start moving. The police escorted the demonstrators across the town square in an easterly direction to Adlerstrasse, from there to the Traunufer and via Pollheimerstrasse back to Minoritenplatz, where the rally came to an end.

20 law enforcement officers have been assigned. If significantly more than the 300 registered participants come to the demo, support will be requested from Wels-Land. Traffic jams are to be expected in downtown Wels during the rally.

Gerhard Kroiss (FP), Wels security officer and deputy mayor, expects a peaceful course: “Last year, like this time, there were corona walks that went off without any problems. But I don’t know the organizer.”

The largest corona demo in Wels was over a month ago. In mid-November, around 600 participants gathered in front of the entrance to the clinic to demonstrate against the recently decided mandatory vaccination for health professions. Nurses were the organizers. The hospital management distanced itself and prohibited employees from wearing uniforms during the demonstration.
