The Cutter James (WMSL 754) is carrying out multiple missions in the Atlantic Oceanmarking the USCG’s partnership with host nations in the Southern Hemisphere in a quest to counter illicit maritime activity and promote maritime law enforcement in the region.

The current Cutter James deployment is focused on developing partnerships between USA and these countries, as well as increasing the interoperability of the North American government with South American nations to combat illegal fishingboth unreported and regulated (IUU fishing).
The Cutter James will be the second US military ship to arrive since 2021
This ship will be the second US military ship to arrive in Uruguayan waters since 2021. In that year, the Cutter Stone (WMSL 758) of the Coast Guard visited Montevideo on similar missions and also did so again last year.
The 2023 visit was viewed with suspicion by the opposition, after the Wide Front question the need for the arrival of a military ship from North America.
