Does early retirement only make sense for “hackers on construction sites”?

About a third of retirees would be willing to continue working part-time after retirement. But the general conditions speak against it for many, says the chairman of the Upper Austrian Senior Citizens’ Association, Josef Pühringer, at the press conference on Friday. He is calling for a complete abolition of pension insurance contributions for those who are still working over the age of 65. “This means that no money is lost because the pensioners who don’t work don’t pay any contributions.”

Actual retirement age is 65

Measures are also needed to adjust the actual retirement age to the legal age. Above all, this requires a change in thinking among the population. “It should be the case that retirement starts at 65 and not at 61 or 62 as is the case now.” Early retirement should therefore only be the exception. According to Pühringer, early retirement makes sense for “hackers on construction sites,” but it is probably not necessary for those people with an office job.

The senior citizens’ association chairman emphasizes: “We don’t want to take jobs away from young people. But where skilled workers are needed, it should pay off to work beyond retirement.”

In order to make the transition to retirement – when it comes – smooth, the partial retirement model works well, says state manager Franz Ebner.

Digitalization discriminates

According to Pühringer, there is also a need for action with regard to age discrimination. Digitalization plays an important role in this. “A fifth of the population grew up without digitalization. At least for the next ten years there will still need to be a transition period during which the administrative offices will continue to have analog offerings.” As an example, he cites the funding for photovoltaic systems, for which applications had to be submitted online. “Older people are digitally slower.” As a result, they are discriminated against because they do not have the same chances of receiving funding as younger people.
