Winter tourism almost back to pre-crisis levels

Despite the warm temperatures, the desire to ski was undiminished.

Holidays in Austria were better booked in the 2023/24 winter season than in the comparable period of the previous year, despite some difficult weather periods. According to initial data from Statistics Austria, overnight stays increased by 5.5 percent to 64.4 million. That was almost as many as in the same period of the record winter of 2018/19 (64.6 million).

The number of guest arrivals increased by 8.3 percent to 17.6 million in the November to March period and was therefore higher than overnight bookings. Although more holidaymakers came, they didn’t stay as long.

“Despite the mild winter with partly uncertain snow conditions, the end of the winter tourism season is proving to be particularly busy with overnight stays,” said General Director Tobias Thomas. However, Austria is heavily dependent on international markets. 78 percent of overnight stays in the winter season so far have come from guests from abroad.

Bookings from Germany rose by 7.7 percent to 24.4 million. Overnight stays by domestic guests followed with an increase of 3.9 percent to 13.9 million. The Dutch come in third place with 6.5 million overnight stays. The majority of bookings were in Tyrol with 24.3 million and Salzburg with 14.7 million overnight stays.
