It became known about the demand of the European Union to Kiev to release Medvedchuk

The European Union demanded that President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy release Viktor Medvedchuk from house arrest. This was reported on December 23 by the Strana.ua portal with reference to an informed source in diplomatic circles.

In addition, according to the portal, Kiev was demanded to lift sanctions against opposition media. The situation was discussed at the Eastern Partnership summit in Brussels.

“European leaders put forward a list of proposals to Zelensky to defuse the situation. In particular, there was a clause stating that the NSDC sanctions against opposition media, including sanctions against Strana and three opposition TV channels closed back in February 2021, are unfair and should be canceled, ”the source said.

On December 17, the Kiev Court of Appeal refused to cancel the politician’s house arrest in the case of coal supplies from Donbass. The court did not satisfy the appeals of both the prosecutor’s office and the defense. Medvedchuk called the court’s decision illegal.

On November 2, Medvedchuk said that the case against him on treason and the embezzlement of national resources in Crimea had been falsified by the Security Service of Ukraine. According to him, the court’s decision to choose a preventive measure is illegal and there were no grounds for this.

On May 13, Medvedchuk said that the prosecution had no evidence of his guilt in the alleged crimes. He stressed that “politically motivated” charges were brought against him, which he called repression and a response to criticism of the authorities.

On February 3, the TV channels 112 Ukraine, NewsOne and ZIK stopped broadcasting after the decree of the Ukrainian leader Zelensky to impose sanctions on them.
