According to the latest epidemiological data from PAHO, the regional office of the World Health Organization (WHO), in the last week there was a decrease in infections in parts of Central and South America, but an increase was found in the Caribbean.
In South America, COVID-19 infections fell 10.7% and deaths 6.3%. Despite this, Bolivia reported a sharp increase in infections, which also rose in Ecuador and Argentina, according to a statement.
The Organization said that in Central America the downward trend in cases continued, with a fall of 10.8%, while in the Caribbean, the increase was 16%.
“Countries must maintain their public health measures to limit the transmission of the virus and adjust them according to local risks of spread”PAHO Director Carissa Etienne was quoted as saying in the statement.
Vaccination and measures to reduce the risk of exposure to Covid-19 are recommended: wear masks, maintain physical distance from other people, wash hands frequently and avoid crowded places, especially in closed spaces.
So far, 57.3% of the population of Latin America and the Caribbean has completed their immunization schedule, according to official data.
PAHO believes that most of the countries in the region will meet or exceed the goal set by the WHO of vaccinating 40% of its eligible population by the end of 2021.
But Haiti, Jamaica, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Guatemala, Saint Lucia and Grenada may not achieve that goal, according to current projections.
