The Syrian returnee Sonia M. will be charged with crimes against humanity and genocide, judicial circles said on Saturday.
The now 25-year-old Yazidi woman was 16 years old when she was kidnapped and enslaved in Iraq. According to an article published on Saturday in the daily newspaper “Le Parisien”, she reported in February at a hearing in Erbil, Iraq, about daily abuse in the household of Sonia M. and her ex-husband Abdelnasser Benjucef, the head of IS’s foreign operations.
Accordingly, the then underage woman was held captive for over a month in the spring of 2015 and was not allowed to drink, eat or shower without Sonia M.’s permission. The Yazidi woman Sonia M. further accuses her of raping her twice and knowing that her husband was raping her.
During an interrogation in March, Sonia M. denied any mistreatment and only admitted to “a single rape” by her ex-husband. According to her statement, obtained by the AFP news agency, the young woman “left her room freely, ate whatever she wanted, went to the toilet when she had to.” Sonia M. said that she did not carry a pistol, as described by the Yazidi woman.
According to a source in the judiciary, after initially being charged as an accomplice in September 2022, Sonia M. was finally charged as a perpetrator in accordance with the requests of the French Counter-Terrorism Prosecutor’s Office (Pnat).
