A large contingent of emergency services from the Red Cross, fire brigade, mountain rescue, police and water rescue were on duty until late at night. The search operation was initially canceled. On Sunday morning, the helpers found the dead man in the area of the gorge exit, said the Salzburg water rescue service.
According to a police press release, the deceased was a member of a group of Czech kayakers. At a torrential and narrowed point in the Lammer Gorge, the Czech hit a rock and was pulled under the water. He was no longer able to swim back to the surface from the boat.
The search was called off at around 10 p.m. on Saturday because of the high water level, as Markus Gewolf, spokesman for the Bischofshofen water rescue service, explained. “Due to high temperatures and snow, there was a lot of meltwater in the gorge.” The water level then receded overnight and the search continued as planned in the morning. The helpers had already been able to limit the search radius. “He was in the spot where we thought he was,” said Gewolf.
Rescuing the dead man was difficult and took hours. The gorge was narrow at this point and the terrain was steep, according to the water rescue team.
