On Sunday morning, nostalgics paraded from the main square of Predappios to the cemetery, where commemorative speeches were given before a private visit to the “Duce” crypt and a mass was celebrated.
According to the organizers, there were no public order problems at the event. As in previous years, the participants were asked to refrain from making the Roman salute with the right arm outstretched in order not to commit a criminal offense. The fascist salute is banned in Italy. Many participants in the memorial ceremony wore black shirts in the fascist tradition.
Benito Mussolini was born in Predappio, the son of a socialist blacksmith. The dictator was shot by partisans on Lake Como on April 28, 1945. His body and that of his lover Clara Petacci were hung upside down in Piazzale Loreto in Milan. It was only twelve years after his death that Mussolini returned to the place where he was born. In 1957 the body was returned to the family, who buried it in the family crypt in Predappio.
