61-year-old climber fell to his death at the Kampermauer

Fatal crash in Weyer

On Sunday, the Alpine police and the Windischgarsten mountain rescue service responded to a tragic operation at the Kampermauer in the municipality of Weyer:

A 61-year-old from the Liezen district in Styria fell 50 meters. Although several witnesses provided first aid, the emergency doctor was only able to determine that the victim was dead after he arrived with a “Martin 3” helicopter.

The accident victim was alone on the via ferrata on the Kampermauer; he was considered an experienced climber. According to eyewitnesses, the man had climbed several routes in the lead and secured himself. When he wanted to abseil down to his position, the accident occurred. The experienced climber fell around 50 meters to the base of the wall and suffered fatal injuries.

Several other climbers who were also on the wall observed the incident and rushed to the man’s aid. They alerted the emergency services and began resuscitation, but this was in vain.

The cause of the accident was determined by the Alpine police to be untangled rope ends during abseiling.
