The last round of negotiations actually failed before Easter. The treaty is to be adopted at the WHO annual meeting in Geneva at the end of May/beginning of June. The agreement is intended to ensure that the world is better prepared for a possible new pandemic than for the corona pandemic.
It envisages a WHO-coordinated supply chain network so that all countries have access to the resources they need in an emergency without trade restrictions. Likewise, part of the production of medicines or vaccines should be made available to poorer countries free of charge or cheaply. The provisions would only apply to countries that ratify the agreement. It would come into force when 60 countries have done so. Austria supports the pandemic treaty, but the opposition FPÖ is opposing it.
