The minister of Work and Social Security (MTSS) and presidential candidate of the Independent Party (PI), Pablo Mieresassured that the plebiscite against the social security reform of the PIT-CNT could generate “a catastrophe” for the Uruguay in pension matters.
The PI leader understands that the union center seeks to “dynamite” the country’s pension system, so his political force will launch a “very strong and very firm” campaign against the initiative.
This Sunday, within the framework of a PI Federal Board meeting held in Montevideothe presidential candidate assured Telemundo that, if the modifications to the Constitution proposed by the PIT-CNTthere will be 1.5 million Uruguayans who are going to complain to the State, since “they are going to feel cheated.”
Along the same lines, he also indicated that there will be lawsuits by the Pension Savings Fund Administrators (AFAP). “There is no awareness of the catastrophe that is generated,” said the leader.
“Argentina did something similar to this 15 years ago, and that’s how it turned out,” he said in reference to the renationalization of the Retirement and Pension Fund Administrators (AFJP) carried out by the first government of the former Argentine president Cristina Fernández de Kirchner in 2008.
The Federal Board of the PI established through a statement that the proposal to be put to a plebiscite would mean “confiscating some 22,000 million dollars” from the accounts of more than 1.5 million Uruguayans, something that “compromises the continuity and sustainability of the PI itself.” system” and “seriously affects the country’s reputation.
“The opposition is not prepared to take over the government”
On the other hand, Mieres pointed directly to the Broad Front (FA): “You are asking for the vote to govern and on this issue you have no position, in fact, you have two different positions, some say it is wrong, others say it is right or at least they signed.”
“The truth is, I think this is a very clear sign that the opposition is not prepared to take over the government, because it never proposed anything alternative regarding social security reform, despite having been on the commission of experts,” he emphasized.
