In 2023, blood was donated 5,874 times in the Vöcklabruck district

Donating blood is easy and can save lives.

Last year, the population in the Vöcklabruck district donated more than 2,700 liters of blood to help other people. For around 30 people, it was their 25th blood donation, and two had already had their blood tapped 50 times. District Captain Johannes Beer, who is also the district head of the Red Cross, invited these selfless donors to a festive evening where they were honored and awarded.

“Blood is an important emergency medication and cannot be produced artificially,” said Beer. “It is all the more important that there are people who donate their time and blood voluntarily and selflessly.”

Whether after an accident, a birth or for patients with a serious illness: In Austria, a blood unit is needed every 90 seconds. That’s almost 1000 blood units per day.

The blood donation process is straightforward: simply come to a Red Cross appointment and fill out the questionnaire. After the medical check and a short conversation with an employee, around 465 milliliters of blood are taken from the vein in the arm. Immediately afterwards, it undergoes safety tests, is separated into different components and processed into various blood products.
