Welser Stadtplatz will be the European Championship living room again

Shared football experience on the Wels town square

The public viewing in Wels for the 2024 European Championships in Germany is back bigger than ever – according to the organizers City Marketing and the Tourism Association, it is the largest in Upper Austria. From June 14th to July 14th, the town square will once again become a second living room for the Welsers, where they can share the football euphoria.

The centerpiece will once again be the Minoritenplatz, where 300 deck chairs will be available for fans in front of the five by three meter LED wall. Food comes from surrounding innkeepers. Around 20 restaurateurs with a total of 4,000 seats in and around Wels city center are also celebrating: They have come up with various promotions such as a “beer pass” as well as special menus and dishes that will be served on all match days. “You can definitely feel the joy in all the inns,” says Helmut Platzer, chairman of the tourism association.

It will be really big on the Austrian match days on June 17th, 21st and 25th: parallel to the usual program on Minoritenplatz, the entire town square will be closed to traffic and a second video wall will be set up. Up to 4,000 people can then celebrate there. The square becomes a fan mile with live music, a sticker swap meet and a panel of experts. “And if the team makes it further, we will also be able to provide larger viewing on the remaining match days,” says city marketing director Peter Jungreithmair.

Emotion and passion

Mayor Andreas Rabl (FP) is full of anticipation: “Following a major sporting event together simply brings people together. I’m particularly pleased that many restaurateurs are also taking part and treating the football fans to culinary delights.” City Councilor for Economic Affairs Martin Oberndorfer promises emotion and passion: “We will bring them into the heart of our city during the European Championships.”

His company is happy to support such events, says Robert Reif, regional director at the main sponsor Sparkasse Oberösterreich: “We look forward to experiencing unforgettable moments together.”
