Passau border police withdrew 115 smugglers from traffic

Irregular migration and smuggling crimes are becoming more and more of a problem.

“In summary, it can be said that in 2023 we were once again able to make a significant contribution to the implementation of the central areas of responsibility of the Bavarian border police – combating smuggling, illegal migration and cross-border crime,” it says at the beginning of the Passau border police inspection’s review Year 2023.

Over the past year, due to the increasing number of cases, the police have focused their resources on “irregular migration” and “combatting smuggling crime”. Through intensive and mobile controls in the border area, 115 smugglers were arrested last year. In 2022 there were 47. “This sent a clear signal against the unscrupulous machinations of the smugglers and those behind them,” says the press release. The number of people trafficked also increased dramatically compared to 2022, from 162 to 832. The most common countries of origin were Turkey, Syria and Afghanistan.

124 arrest warrants issued

The border police also wrote that significant successes were achieved in the fight against cross-border crime last year. The amount of narcotics seized increased sharply in 2023, and many forged documents were also taken out of circulation. The emergency services seized 18 stolen vehicles with a total value of around 400,000 euros.

A total of 124 arrest warrants were issued by the Passau border police station in 2023. “We are convinced that these successful searches make a significant contribution to strengthening the feeling of security in the Lower Bavarian-Upper Austrian border region and beyond,” writes the Passau border police.
