The United Kingdom wants to expel 5,700 migrants to Rwanda

The British government indicated on Tuesday that it hopes expel to Rwanda “by the end of the year” an identified group of 5,700 asylum seekersafter the adoption of its controversial law aimed at stopping the arrivals of clandestine migrants through the English Channel.

In accordance with this text, approved by Parliament last Tuesday, the conservative government of Rishi Sunak plans to begin expulsions before July.

According to a document published on Monday by the Ministry of the Interior, Rwanda “agreed in principle” to receive 5,700 asylum seekers.

These are among the more than 57,000 migrants who arrived illegally in the United Kingdom through the English Channel, between the beginning of January 2022 and the end of June 2023, according to an AFP count based on official figures.

“We hope to expel [este grupo] between now and the end of the year”Health Minister Victoria Atkins confirmed to Sky News on Tuesday.

The Ministry of the Interior specified that of the 5,700 asylum seekers in question, 2,143 “can be located for detention” in anticipation of their expulsion.

The Minister of Health assured that the government was doing everything possible to locate the others. “We want the message to be very clear (…) We will find them and they will be expelled,” he said.

Ireland recently stated that it is already registering a significant flow of migrants from the United Kingdom, due to the neighboring country’s immigration policy.

Within the framework of a new treaty between London and Kigali, the new law seeks to expel migrants who arrived illegally, wherever they come from, to Rwanda, which will examine their asylum request. They will not be able to return to the United Kingdom whatever the final decision.
