This Wednesday, May 1, the portfolio of External relationships participated, together with other representatives of various state institutions, in the Fourth Review Cycle of the Universal Periodic Review (EPU), at the headquarters of the Human Rights Council of the UN in Geneva.

In this instance, a total of 97 Member States of UN. There, “the traditional commitment of Uruguay with respect for the Human rights, and the achievements made in the fight against various forms of discrimination, the protection of the rights of vulnerable groups, the protection of the rights of migrants, the fight against gender-based violence, and progress in environmental matters were valued. , among other aspects evaluated”.
In addition, several delegations praised “the efforts and results to improve inclusion in different areas, which was also recognized in recent reports from regional organizations.”

On the other hand, some delegations made recommendations regarding the areas or issues in which they consider the country should deepen its policies. Among them, some were mentioned such as “the situation in prisons, the persistence of gender violence, equality in the participation of women and the situation of people of African descent.”
For his part, the minister “reaffirmed the historic commitment of Uruguay with the multilateral system for the protection of Human Rights, as well as the open, transparent and collaborative spirit with which the country presents itself in these types of instances.”
Meanwhile, he also showed the country’s efforts to achieve inclusion, “even in the context of recent crises.” In addition to reviewing the situation in Uruguay in recent years, he also highlighted the main areas subject to recommendations and especially highlighted the approval of the First National Human Rights Plan 2023-2027.
