A young couple of parents had to go through anxious minutes on Wednesday afternoon in Mauthausen (Perg district): A chain of unfortunate circumstances resulted in both of them being locked out of the house while the child was still in the kitchen-living room, which was completely filled with smoke. What happened?
“Luckily we were there quickly”
The 34-year-old father was in the kitchen with his 30-year-old partner at around 3 p.m. on the holiday, preparing food on the stove. The two of them went out onto the terrace for just a brief moment. Meanwhile, the newborn was sleeping in the Spring cradle. “A strong gust of wind caused the door to close and the parents were no longer able to get back into the house,” reports Roland Krankl, commander of the Mauthausen Volunteer Fire Department, in an interview with OÖN. To make matters worse, heavy smoke developed in the apartment as a result of eating on the stove.

While the 30-year-old was driving to Linz to get the spare key from her mother, the man raised the alarm and, together with a neighbor, tried in vain to open the patio door. Under the operational keyword “Fire building, Baby in the apartment“Both Mauthausen fire departments were alerted at around 3:20 p.m. “Luckily we were on site quickly,” says Krankl.
A respiratory protection team arrived With the help of the police, they gained access through a window to the now completely smoke-filled rooms and brought the baby outside. The child was conscious, said Krankl. It was treated by paramedics and then taken to a hospital for further checks. The fire brigades have meanwhile ventilated the apartment, which is still habitable. The operation was ended around 4 p.m.
