The task was to write two texts in five hours, which would be given equal weighting when grading, regardless of the number of words. Content, text structure, style and expression as well as the normative correctness of language are assessed. Dictionaries were allowed to be used, but not encyclopedias.

Those were the topics

  • In the first thematic package entitled “Literature – Art – Culture“The aim was to interpret a prose text by the Linz author Teresa Präauer (“Five Girls”) and to write a commentary on a text about a pilot project in which young people are to be introduced to monuments through parkour running.
  • Around “Gaming” was the second topic package. Here the high school graduates were supposed to write a text analysis based on a newspaper article on the topic of “Virtual Free Spaces”. Among other things, it was about discussing the possibilities that arise from PC games. Second task in This topic block included a commentary on the topic of “Virtual Protest Actions”.
  • Those who chose the third thematic package were given an opportunity to engage with “Social norms“. In 540 to 660 words, an opinion speech should refer to how to deal with social diversity. In addition, a report on gender medicine had to be summarized.

What happens next?

The high school graduates now have time over the weekend to recover from the strain of the first exam – or to study for the next exam. The second subject on May 7th is the supreme discipline of mathematics. Because of the interruption caused by Ascension Day, the exams are taking a particularly long time this time; Latin and Greek will not be completed until May 16th.

This time the Central Matura is divided into three calendar weeks. After German and math, English will follow on May 8th, and in the week from May 13th there will be one more day each for French, Italian, Spanish or the minority languages Slovenian, Croatian and Hungarian, as well as for Greek and Latin. The only subject in which the exams are uniform for all participating students is German. In all other subjects there are differences depending on the type of school or, in the case of foreign languages, on the number of years taught.
