Inflation in April had its fourth consecutive drop and stood at 3.68% year-on-year

The inflation registered a new decrease in April, although slight, with a variation that went from 3.80% to 3.68% year-on-year, and after the fourth consecutive decrease it marks eleven months within the target range established by the Central Bank of Uruguay (BCU).

The data comes from the latest report on the estimates of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) prepared by the National Institute of Statistics (INE), corresponding to last April; which demonstrates, in turn, the eleventh consecutive month within the range between 3% and 6% set as the government’s objective.

He CPI registered a practically zero monthly variation of 0.63%, somewhat above expectations – which marked an increase of 0.43% according to the latest BCU survey -; while the annual accumulated figure reached 2.84%, establishing the General Index number at 107.53.

In the comparison to April 2023, the number of General index was 103.71; while the accumulated monthly variation then was 0.75%, and the annual variation was 427%. During the third month of last year, the CPI estimate reached 7.61% year-on-year.

How did the prices of the different items behave?

When evaluating the divisions with the greatest impact on the percentage variation of the CPI, the main one was Clothes and shoes (1.93%), followed by Food and non-alcoholic beverages (1.49%), Transport (0.7%) and Restaurants and accommodation services (0.66%).

Regarding each product, the vegetables, tubers and legumes They represented the greatest variation, with an increase of 11.63% driven by the price of zucchini and zucchini (43.94%), carrots (42.15%) and tomatoes (40.27%); followed by the non-alcoholic beverages which registered an increase of 1.57%.

Within the category, the fruits and nuts They presented the greatest decrease (7.59%), due to significant improvements in the prices of citrus fruits, with mandarins (-22.91%) leading the way.

In Clothing and Footwear, for its part, “the variations due to the beginning of the autumn-winter season stand out in Women’s Clothing (3.37%) and in Women’s Footwear (2.97%)”, according to the INE report. . Likewise, in Transportation, the increases in airline ticket prices (12.65%) were the protagonists; while in Restaurants and accommodation services, the decrease in hotel rates (-8.51%) stood out.
