The fire brigade museum in the historic armory in St. Florian has existed for 40 years. There should actually have been a state exhibition to mark the anniversary. As is well known, this fell victim to the savings pen. There is still a special exhibition: “Climate.Weather.Fire Department”. The Fire Department Museum is starting its anniversary year with this special exhibition on Floriani Day today. “Since December 21st, around 9,000 comrades from 600 fire departments have carried out more than 2,100 missions” – that was a newspaper report on December 23rd of the previous year. That was a few months ago and it was not an exception. Storm events and their intensity are increasing and they are having a massive impact on the work of the Upper Austrian fire departments.
What is behind the help?
Knowing what is behind the comprehensive aid and how it works is important in order to give people a feeling of the importance of their own preparedness and prevention in the event of a disaster. “The exhibition does not shed light on the natural events, but on the people who move out to repair the damage,” says curator Anita Kuisle. The special exhibition uses specific events from recent years in Upper Austria to show the work of the fire brigade in dealing with heavy rain, floods, storms, hail, forest fires and snow pressure. Film excerpts from interviews with firefighters are a central communication element. They report on their personal experiences during disaster operations. Visitors are repeatedly invited to think about their own options for action and their role in disaster prevention and management.

Bet numbers doubled
“The fire brigade is always there when the effects of the climate crisis become apparent. The number of operations has doubled in recent years. Climate protection is also fire protection, flood protection and disaster protection,” says Climate Protection Minister Leonore Gewessler, who is organizing the exhibition together with the State Council Stefan Kaineder and fire brigade regional councilor Michaela Langer-Weninger opened. “We are constantly equipping our fire departments with base devices. This starts with the provision of disaster relief camps and emergency power supplies in the fire stations, and leads to equipment for fighting floods or forest fires,” says Langer-Weninger. Drones and mobile fuel depots are also stationed across the state. Fire brigade president and state fire brigade commander Robert Mayer: “You only need to look at the statistics to see that climate and weather events are increasingly challenging us,” he says. His predecessor and exhibition coordinator Wolfgang Kronsteiner added: “The exhibition is dedicated to our members and deals with the people who are deployed. They are the most important pillar in disaster control.”
Exhibition opened
As of today, the exhibition is open to all visitors. Admission to it and to the St. Florian Fire Department Museum is free for Upper Austrian firefighters, their children and their partners.
