Israeli forces kill five Palestinians in nighttime raid in West Bank

More than 400 Palestinians killed

The Palestinians want the West Bank and Gaza, which Israel captured in the 1967 Middle East war, as the nucleus of an independent state with East Jerusalem as its capital.

U.S.-backed talks to reach a deal between Israel and the Palestinians have been stalled for a decade, but the Gaza war has increased pressure to resume efforts toward a two-state solution.

More than 34,000 Palestinians have been killed in the seven-month Israeli assault on the Gaza Strip, according to health officials in the Hamas-ruled enclave.
