Films that get under your skin: These are the “Crossing Europe” winners

The cultural quarter at Linz’s OK-Platz is intended to become the control center for all museums.

  • Best feature film (5,000 euros)
    “Milk”
Director: Stefanie Kolk (NL 2023, 96 min.)

Film description of the festival: The young couple Robin and Jonas go through a time of great sadness because their baby is born as a stillborn. When Robin’s body begins to produce breast milk, it is a double-edged sword: final connection with the deceased child and constant reminder of the pain. Since Robin is unable to throw away the milk, bottles soon start piling up everywhere. After visiting a self-help group, Robin decides to donate her milk – but this turns out to be more difficult than expected… In her sensitive feature film debut, Kolk completely avoids melodramatic effects and relies on the power of quiet moments.

    Honorable mention
    “The Human Hibernation”
Director: Anna Cornudella Castro (ES 2024, 90 min.)

  • Best Documentary (5,000 euros)
    “Fairy Garden”
    Gergő Somogyvári (HU/RO/HR 2023, 83 min)

Film description of the festival: Pushed to the margins of Hungarian society by repression and discrimination – also officially in the form of law – Laci and Fanni live together in a house in a sparse forest. Since she was rejected by her parents because she is trans, Fanni has been living with the homeless man who is around forty years older than her. The “purpose shared apartment” has become a respectful friendship, and “neighbor” Aranka has grown fond of Fanni as well. Gergő Somogyvári accompanies the three with gentle cinematic observation, emphasizes their defensive dignity and documents a solidarity that urgently needs to find its way into the mainstream of society.

That same spring, 15-year-old, sheltered Mariia meets the mysterious new girl at her school. Mimi comes from a broken home and now lives with her aunt in her run-down house. After initial skepticism, Mariia is fascinated by Mimi; her presence envelopes her life in an ever more intensely radiant light. Their growing feelings make them increasingly dependent on each other, until life without each other is unimaginable. 20 years later, Mariia returns and wallows in her memories marked by regret and melancholy.
