170 kilometers long, 200 meters wide, 500 meters high: These are the planned key data for the future city “The Line” in Saudi Arabia. It is scheduled to be finished in 2049, and by 2030 1.5 million people are expected to live there – nine million in the finished city. It should also be free of cars, roads and carbon dioxide emissions.
At least that’s what the government’s plans in the oil state are saying. Now the project could be implemented in a significantly scaled down version. This is reported by the Bloomberg agency, citing anonymous sources. The state fund has also not yet approved the budget for Neom for this year.

Instead of offering living space for 1.5 million people by 2030, “only” 300,000 people will probably settle there. This is mainly because “The Line” apparently will not be long enough to reach the planned population by the end of the decade. It is said that 2.4 of the planned 170 kilometers could be completed in the next six years. It is known that The Line will be built in several stages – but those responsible apparently overestimated the size of the individual sections. The Line is part of Neom – a settlement project that is part of the Vision 2030 plan to transform the Saudi economy.
Neom consists of several sub-projects. The most important is The Line. These include the Trojena resort in the mountains, the luxury holiday island of Sindalah, the octagonal city of Oxagon, which partially floats in the sea, and the currently largest hydrogen production plant.
Work continues on these projects. Sindalah is scheduled to open this year. The Asian Winter Games are scheduled to be held in Trojena in 2029.
“Moving forward at full steam”
Saudi Economy Minister Faisal Al Ibrahim rejects the Bloomberg report. “All projects are being pushed forward at full speed,” he told CNBC. “We set out to do something unprecedented and we will deliver something unprecedented.” The projects would be implemented as planned. However, he added that decisions would be made taking into account the impact on the economy. The country’s economy is currently growing faster and the government wants to prevent it from overheating. “We don’t want to carry out these projects at the price of too many imports against our own interests.”
