1b regulation in the House of Commons: “A catastrophe for us”

“The current 1b regulation is a catastrophe for us,” says Matthias Spitzer, sporting director of the Landesliga West club Munderfing. With promotion last year, the club had to comply with the regulation mentioned, which has been in effect since the 2022/2023 season. Since then, the state league teams have had the choice of fielding a U18 team or a 1b team in the 2nd class. In Munderfing they decided on the latter, but: “Our structures are not designed for two combat teams. Only teams that have the necessary financial resources can manage that,” says Spitzer. For this reason, the Munderfinger – who are in 13th place after the 1:3 against Bad Wimsbach and are still in danger of relegation – will form a syndicate with the neighboring club from Pfaffstätt (2nd class southwest) from next season.

“Perfect platform”

“We are aware that the 1b teams are an additional challenge. However, the feedback from most clubs is consistently positive because the sporting value of a second fighting team is already very high,” says Stefan Hochreiter, chairman of the committees for sports and game operations at Upper Austrian Football Association. The idea also came from the clubs themselves, emphasizes Hochreiter. “We as an association are trying to create opportunities for this.”

In the east, this is something that people like to take advantage of with newcomers Naarn. “We are very positive about this regulation because it is a perfect platform for young players who are pushing their way into the first team,” says sports director Dominik Tauber.
